Important! - This version does not support Truck ELD. The 3.19.2 ELD version is available for download in our Store.

Firmware Version 3.20 Updates
  • Removed ELD, GPS and Time functionality.
  • J1708 data is polled along with input from the Com port interrupt.

Mark:

Not having done this before I am a bit uncertain about the procedure.
I downloaded the .msi file, but not the ELD file. From what I read I believe this is correct.
I installed the .msi which also has subdirectories for 'firmware' and 'driver'.

When I plug in the adapter it flashes red, then blue and after a few cycles shuts down. I want to note here that my computer does not have Bluetooth. Is that required for updating or is it just normal since it is not actually updating at that time?

In device manager there is the Cerb Family device and the caution symbol that there is no driver. Trying to load the driver by pointing to the driver subdirectory finds no driver. Is this important or simply not necessary?

I want to ensure I am on the right track before starting the update.

Thanks, jon

Follow the instructions for installing the driver explicitly and to the letter. It's very picky as to the sequence of instructions.

I followed carefully the instructions. The driver seemed to install correctly.
The OS is Win 20H1 on my computer. This computer does not have bluetooth, if that matters.

Now the Device Manager does not display Cerb device where prior to update the device did show, with a no driver error.

After the driver I updated the firmware with the default selection, 3.20 9 pin BLE. It displayed writing to a memory location.
The update failed with a message to 'try again. I did try again, more than once, each time getting a fail. Now there are no lights when I plug it in.
My adapter serial is 74DE26511C

Anything else I can do?

Bluetooth is not needed. When you plug the USB cable into the adapter, does the Cerb device show up? Did you try rebooting your computer? How about another USB cable?

My win10 computer is quite old, has older usb hardware. I keep it updated but use it only if I absolutely need Win. I have a router that will not talk to this W10 box via usb, presumably because it does not have newer usb hardware.
When I first plugged in the adapter it flashed the lights and Cerb appeared under "other devices".

I went ahead with the driver install, after that I moved on to firmware and I've seen no lights since then. I did do a reboot. Cerb no longer shows up in device manager - It did show up before I ran the driver install.

Today I plugged the adapter into my coach with key on engine not running: no lights on adapter whereas there are usually lights with the key on.
======Later====
I just tried another usb cable and have no lights.

Finally, I have a new iMac with Virtualbox that has a copy of Win10 installed. I attached to that and do get "other devices" in DevMgr showing Cerb & warning for driver. I presume it is because there is no driver installed on this copy of W10.

My fear is that I have unwittedly bricked the adapter, always possible but I've never bricked a device on a firmware upgrade before.

I am hesitant, but willing, to try again using VirtualBox on my iMac. The computer has the latest USB hardware and W10 does see it attached even tho the adapter has no lights.
That said, with no lights on the adapter I wonder if it will work. I'd like to try this but will wait for your comment.

Thanks.

Interesting. If you see the Cerb Family device when the adapter is plugged in then it's not totally bricked so it's still possible to flash it (you won't see the Cerb Family device if the adapter is not plugged in). Go and try the VirtualBox. I'm curious to see if it will work since there are others who would want to know.

Is your old Win10 computer up to date with Windows? Windows version must be 1909 (18363) or lower, or 20H2 (19042) or higher. If your Windows 10 version is 2004 (19041) then the update will now work.

If push comes to shove, you can send it in for the update - https://bluefire-llc.com/store/adapter-firmware

Both old computer and Win10 running on Virtual Box under iMac are 19041 or 42. I'll get back to you on how it goes, gotta re-redownload the .msi & unpak it.

Thanks, I was hoping this would work for me if all else fails.

Failed. I have some photo's if you like. I believe it failed due to not booting the adapter (no lights).
Driver installed ok, afterwards DevMgr added "Universal Serial Bus Devices" -> Cerb Family.

When running the firmware install it erased 0x080a0000 then rebooted (no lights) .
Then a write message and finally error: Unable to deploy to device.
The instruction panel then displayed "The Firmware Update did not succeed. Try Again".

For reference using VB, Win10 detected the connection to Adapter but did not activate. VB needed me to choose the usb control on VB and select GEH Electronics (not sure here of exact wording, but obvious it is Adapter).
Once active the update runs (except I did not get booted condition of red then blue lights).

I will send this in to you. Should I be paying for update or repair? And then it's a question of which repair choice to choose?

Try again? - https://bluefire-llc.com/store/adapter-firmware. If it still fails, try clearing your browser cache.

Mark,
There is a "." at the end of your url.. that CANNOT be there, so the link is BROKEN.
For anyone else, delete the last period (dot) and the link will work.

I'm having the same prob as jonh... I previously updated my adapter from 'whatever it came as' to 3.19 a while back. All went as expected.

However, THIS time, when I plugged my adapter up to my (Win7) computer, it FAILED to recognize the driver and the 'cerb device' is showing an error. I have the drivers that I originally downloaded (from whereever they were then .. can't find them ANYWHERE now) in my ProgramFiles(x86) Bluefire directory, but pointing the cerb device to that location says 'no device found'. Tried several times .. with different USB cables and USB ports. All same. Adapter is plugged in and LED are blinking GREEN (only)[just woke up this morning and now flashing BLUE ONLY). Tried UNINSTALLING the cerb device drivers - computer said OK.. then tried to reinstall drivers .. 'no device driver found'.

I have just downloaded and "installed" the latest (I presume) update file from the website per your emails above. There is only ONE file .. and msi file, which opens a window that tells me my adapter is no connected. No indication of any drivers that were installed or whether they need to be. It stops when it says 'no device connected'.

SO WHERE can I find device drivers for this thing now?
This is what I have now...
filenames
Those files current ones?

Steve

Try the latest version. It will have a 'Driver Install' button that will show the instructions for installing the driver. Go ahead and try to reinstall the driver.

OK.. I FINALLY got it to install and update the device correctly. The instructions are NOT EXACTLY CORRECT for Windows 7 users. The written steps do not correctly indicate the options that are presented. However, after going through it about 10 times, I found the correct steps and got it done. Unfortunately, I cannot remember EXACTLY what the steps were to help others - sorry. IIRC, it was step 4 where things were not 'as expected', so I had to improvise. I did get the correct DRIVERS by uninstalling the existing one, then downloading from the link again and using the Windows install option for .msi files and the driver date came up with today's date instead of one from 2 weeks ago... and it finally worked.

I sure hope these updates fix the problems I've been having with the trip functions.

Steve

How To update Firmware using VirtualBox

I also ran into the symptoms described above where I got "Unable to deploy to device" and the adapter lights no longer blinked. I was trying to do this from Windows 10 on a VirtualBox VM on Mac laptop. The solution below would also work for VirtualBox on linux.

Explaination: VirtualBox needs to be configured so that it auto-mounts the USB device. This is necessary because the adapter gets rebooted during the upgrade process, but in doing the reboot it is unmounted. If VirtualBox is not configured to auto-mount the USB device "Cerb Family", then the rest of the firmware upgrade cannot complete and "Unable to deploy..." message results.

Solution: First go thru the driver install steps. Once the driver is installed, the Adapter can be mounted by selecting the VirtualBox menu DEVICES ->USB, etc.
Also under the DEVICES menu, it is necessary to create a permanent filter that will auto-mount your new "Cerb-Family" USB device automatically. To do this, go to VirtualBox application, select the DEVICES menu -> USB -> USB SETTINGS. Add a USB Filter that refers to the Cerb-Family device. If you've already got the adapter mounted as a USB device, then it's easy to just select the device during the filter creation. Once this permanent filter is in place, then reboot Windows OS, and run the firmware update steps.
