I thought I'd post this as it seems like my coach is an exception, at least what I've been reading.

I have a 6 pin under the steering wheel. It's a J1708 bus. I also have a 9 pin in an outside cabinet, under the driver seat. It's also a J1708. On both of these outlets, I am only getting engine data. No transmission data. Not too much of a surprise.

I found a 9 pin in the rear engine, strapped to the dip stick tube. It's a J1939 bus and it does receive both engine and tranny information and displays on my IPad dash.

Since that plug is 35'+/- behind the drivers seat, the bluetooth won't connect when my IPad is up front with me, so I've got to figure out how to run an extension wire up front. The Link on BlueFire's for the adapters only carry 10' sections. I'll need 4. That seems silly. Can't we find a source to get 1 long one? I googled but couldn't find anything, in fact most cables I saw were much shorter.

So I'm looking for a source for longer cables or better yet, if anyone knows how I can change the front 9 pin J1708 to a J1939, I'd love to hear about that option.

The J1939 bus is a twisted pair of wires, shielded or unshielded depending on implementation. Google “j1939 twisted pair”. Two more pins in the connector supply power. Google “deusch wiring J1939.” That’s all you need. IFIWM, I’d use the spare 9pin in the cabinet up front. Needs to be terminated in 120 ohms.

If any of this seems a little over your head, I'd recommend going to a professional. Remember the J1939 bus is bidirectional - it transmits commands to the engine and transmission as well as data from them - so you don't want it to malfunction.
